Description
This image shows some of the detail of the tower against a blue sky on a bright Florida day.
The Alhambra Water Tower was part of Coral Gables founder George Merrick's idea of a beautiful city which turned everyday utilitarian objects into art. The structure is a pleasing architectural shell, making look like a lighthouse, over a normal functional water tank.
The Alhambra Water Tower was built c. 1923-24, it's design attributed to Denman Fink, a designer for Coral Gables at the time.
It was listed in the Coral Gables Register of Historic Places in 1988.
Coral Gables was envisioned by George Merrick to be the "Mediterranean Riviera" and draw the wealthy and prominent in the 1920's.
See other examples of Coral Gables architecture at my Coral Gables gallery which includes the Alhambra Water Tower and the Country Club of Coral Gables, among others.
