Description
The San Carlos Institute, originally a wooden structure, was opened in 1871 by Cuban exiles in Key West as a patriotic, cultural, civic, and educational center. It was central to the independence movement of Cuba, being named for Seminario San Carlos in Cuba.
The Institute moved to a new building in 1884, which was destroyed in a large fire that burned down much of Key West in 1886. The next structure was built in 1890 in its present location on Duval Street.
Jose Marti, outspoken Cuban poet and patriot, visited the Institute in 1892 to help gather support for the Cuban independence movement. He was very taken with the Institute and called it "La Casa Cuba".
In 1919, the Institute was destroyed by a hurricane and after several years, this building opened in 1924. This historic landmark has many architectural features, louvered windows, curves, arches, marble staircases, mosaics, tiled floors, as well as many others, making it representative of Cuban architecture. It has been called the "the jewel of Key West".
